Successful Horse Racing Betting Dependant On Number Of Variables
By: Stellar Stevens

Horse racing is tantamount to a religion to many people, and at the risk of blaspheming may we boldly suggest that the UK's various racecourses are their shrines. Making the short pilgrimage on a regular basis are Irish horse owners, trainers and jockeys, who have a habit of seizing the majority of the spoils whenever they take to the field.

That said, the world of horse racing is of universal appeal, attracting owners, viewers and punters from far and wide.

Indeed, spoken of in the historical context as the "sport of kings" many of today's stable owners are just that in fact, with Saudi Arabian royalty possessing enviable stables of thoroughbred bloodlines. And horse racing's popularity in the Middle East shows no signs of slowing up, as the regions wealthy continue to indulge their passion at every conceivable opportunity.

The attraction to the ordinary person on the street however is the ease in which they can take part in such events (played out on the grand stages or otherwise), simply by venturing out to their local bookmaker or now - thanks to online betting - from the comfort of their favourite armchair. Of course, with a plethora of horse races up and down the country week in, week out you could always pay your entrance fee and soak up the live racing experience for yourself, and make your flutter then and there.

During the course of the racing seasons many large meetings come and go, with them bringing an almost carnival-like atmosphere to the course where they pitch up; making the event a true celebration of horse racing in its entirety.

The Cheltenham Festival, Glorious Goodwood, the Coronation Cup, the Epsom Derby, Royal Ascot and Aintree's hosting of the world famous steeplechase, the Grand National being just a few examples of where hundreds of thousands of pounds are won or lost in the heat of the meeting's moment.

Arguably, horse racing was very much at the birth and fulcrum thereafter of modern betting practices, and to this day remains hard to beat for the sheer thrill of it all, despite the best interests of football betting, greyhound betting, tennis betting and golf betting muscling in on the action. Not to mention the ground that online betting is covering in the enclosures marked bingo, casino and gaming.

On closer inspection it's the no nonsense approach advocated by horse racing betting in its most basic forms that help make it a natural born winner in the eyes of the punters. The betting is in essence split into the three potential revenue streams. Betting to win, to show and to place.

'Betting to win' is without exception the most widely acknowledged of the triumvirate of disciplines, yet not necessarily benefiting from the most widespread of exponents. The upshot is this. If the horse you backed wins the race, then you collect your spoils based on the pre-race odds that were fixed as you placed your bet.

'Betting to place' offers the relative safeguard of gaining if your chosen horse comes in first or second, albeit at reduced odds over an outright bet to win flutter.

The third type of horse racing bet is the 'bet to show'. Doubtless the meaning behind the common phrase hedging your bets this pre-race agreement affords the punter the luxury of becoming a winner whatever position their horse finishes within the top three. Although odds are diminished accordingly should it be placed second or third, seeing as the risk is calculated to be far less than again, an outright win in the eyes of a bookmaker.

The handicapping system is at the root of all horse racing betting, and is as illustrative to horse followers as a book of worship is to devout followers of religion. The Bible of the horse racing world, handicapping is a means by which to represent the field of competitors by taking into account all the variables that could come into play.

Horses, jockeys, stables, owners, bloodlines, ground conditions and even the manner in which the individual horse behaves in the stalls are just a collection of the factors that should enter the conscience - and be painstakingly considered - by the punter before they apply their stake. Itself not a foolproof means to an end by any stretch of the imagination, yet the critical starting point for any serious horse racing betting.
